Excerpts from the transcript of the “The Phil Lecture Radio Show” (or “Science Saturday”) from June 12th 2010.

Phil Lecture (commentator): Welcome to “Science Saturday.” I’m Phil Lecture. Our first guest was born S-Gene positive, endowed with strong intellectual capabilities. You could call him a certified genius. He has been working on “Project M” for 12 years and with it’s recent de-classification, he’s here to let us know the details of the project and talk about his new book, “Olympus Reborn: Our World And The Gods That Inhabit It” which is on shelves now. Welcome Dr. Simon Lenelle.

Dr. Lenelle: Thank you Phil.

Phil Lecture: Doctor Lenelle, from reading your book I can attest that you have some fantastic information to share with us. First of all, how did your research come about?

Dr. Lenelle: Well, it started 13 years ago when the first extra terrestrial visitor of the modern age landed in Vermont. His name was Mythee and he was a political refugee from the planet Grazzm. It’s a long story really, a lot of it has been told in recent headlines, so in brief: The United States quickly took guardianship of Mythee and made all information concerning him classified to all but top-level personnel. He appeared and acted quite peaceful, however, every time Mythee saw a Super he reacted in an excited manner. It didn’t take long for government psychologists to realize that he actually knew who had powers and who didn’t. I was called in because of my security status and familiarity with S-Gene research. We began to study the Grazzm dialect and Mythee started to learn English which he adapted to quite gracefully- but it took a few years. As we communicated it became clear that he was a historian. He had been guarding his planet’s historical records when his current government found them unfavorable to their agenda. As the Grazzm government tried to re-write the records, Mythee attempted to oppose them, but eventually fled. He actually knew of Earth and felt he could keep a vault of accurate historical records here. We’ve been helping him to do just that. It has been a classified process until three weeks ago when the security levels were lifted by President Clan. I had anticipated this clearance and finished my book to coincide with the de-classification to help people understand a little bit about what we learned.

Phil: Why isn’t your book about Mythee himself? That seems to be the real curiosity to people right now. Why did you instead choose to focus on the origins of the S-Gene?

Lenelle: I would love to have told Mythee’s story, but, (I think its okay to announce this) he is actually writing his own book, in English! It’s an exciting time for my colleagues and I include Mythee as a peer and a colleague. His intellect is remarkable.

Phil: So you’re using what we know of his story as a jumping-off point to educate people on the S- Gene?

Lenelle: Exactly, and to inform them of its peculiar manifestation on our planet, which are, the so-called Supers. But it would’ve been difficult to discuss my theory without acknowledging where I obtained much of my data- Mythee’s history books were filled with his race’s scientific findings. Their histories differed from ours because they contained specific formulas and proofs in their historical texts rather than just the scientific publications. These records helped me to arrive at what seems to be the most reasonable explanation of the S-Gene explosion.

Phil: I guess it’s about time we heard your Theory huh?

Lenelle: Well, it’s less of a theory and more like documented history- albeit alien history! To state it simply, some members of the Grazzm race visited Earth during our pre- historic age. They left behind a satellite. By coincidence a NASA shuttle stumbled across it soon after we found Mythee. He helped us to recognize the inscriptions on the side of the satellite as an ancient form of his dialect. The satellite itself was leaking radiation, very slowly. Through his historical records, we were able to formulate the effect this radiation was having on our planet. As it turns out small doses of Grazzm radiation have brought about large consequences, namely mutations, in our species. It has caused the S-Gene manifestion in human beings!

Phil: Radiation from a leftover alien satellite- hmm. So tell me Doctor, why were the aliens here in the first place?

Lenelle: They came to terra-form our planet. They were going to use a virus like micro-organic substance to alter plant and animal life. In this way the atmosphere and all living things would become suitable to their living conditions, by way of controlled mutation.

Phil: And Mythee helped you learn all of this?

Lenelle: Yes, with his histories.

Phil: Where would this “terra-forming” have left human beings had it actually taken place?

Lenelle: We don’t know for sure, maybe we wouldn’t have evolved! But we discovered in our research…

Phil: …and I also read, you actually believe that the so-called Greek God’s of myth were, not so much myth, but manifestations of the S-Gene effect?

Lenelle: Yes, I talk about it very briefly in the book. This one’s a little harder to prove with current revealed documents. Some of my proofs are still classified but the Clan Administration has given me approval to speak of the theory itself. Yes, the Greek God’s were most likely the result of an S-gene breakout. They were essentially supers that formed tribes and squabbled and loved and fought and did all the things we read about. More on that can be said when certain classifications are, hopefully, lifted.

Phil: Let’s take a call from Greg in Baltimore. Greg you’re on the air.

Caller (Greg): Hi Phil. Great show today. I was wondering, I know the doctor helped develop the S-gene tests. The police recently gave one to my brother. It turned out to be negative, but I was wondering if you could tell me how it works? My family always thought he might be a super, but the test was said otherwise. I wanted to know, is it really a foolproof test? And what are its origins? I’ll take my answer off the air- thank you.

Lenelle: Well Greg, I hope your brother’s run-in with the police was a pleasant one.

Lenelle and Phil: (chuckling)

Lenelle: To answer your question though Greg, the test is accurate. About 15 years ago, myself, and a colleague, Dr. Moon, isolated the so called “S-genes”. It’s a series of genes really, plural. We developed a fluorescence which will bind with the genes in question. It does this everywhere in the body…

Phil: The fluorescence is taken in pill form correct?

Lenelle: Right. It is taken orally and activates fully in about one hour. We then shine a light on the epedermic areas of the body. The light is designed to isolate the fluorescent bindings on the subjects DNA. If it glows neon-blue, you’re a “super.” If not, we don’t see anything. It’s highly unlikely that the test would give false results.

Phil: And as I understand, only Government agencies are allowed to administer the test. Why is that? Why can’t the common man find out for himself?

Lenelle: I deal with that in the book Phil. The chapter entitled “1999 and Government Sanctions” discusses this in depth. It really is for the best. As a federal employee with inside information I can say without a doubt that this needs to be regulated.

I've been a Beatles fan as far back as I can remember. I have the White Album, Abbey Road, Magical Mystery Tour, and Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band memorized through and through.

Somehow I didn't know this song existed until a few days ago.

It first appeared on the Yellow Submarine album; which I had a recording of as a kid, but somehow this song didn't make it to my copy of the tape.

So bonus! I get to enjoy a "new" song by one of my favorite bands.

Zombies: A Distaste and Dichotomy

I am sick of zombies. Sorry fanboys. I don't pick up any of the thirty-seven-million zombie comics that come out each month. (I do buy the Walking Dead trades for my little brother, but I haven't read them past volume two or so.)

As a matter of fact I have a maxim for my superhero world: "No Nazis, zombies, or gratuitous resurrections." (Hold me to it people!)

You're breaking all my rules!

Zombies seem cliche, boring, and generally overused.

One might say, "Nicholas how can you hate zombies for being cliche when superheroes have definitely worn out their welcome?"

A couple of things:

Firstly, hats off to the talented people who have popularized zombies. I'm talking about George A Romero, Danny Boyle, Robert Kirkman, Edgar Wright, and Capcom. I have enjoyed many works of art that happen to include the flesh-eating undead.

Secondly, this is my opinion and mine only. I'm burned out on zombies, but I haven't reached that threshold with superheroes. Perhaps it has something to do with their mythic qualities. I see Superman and co. as more than twentieth century antiques. I see men in capes as an extension of the "monomyth." Superheroes, to me, are a part of the transcendent hero's journey that all human beings share in some way or another.

Zombies on the other hand, I just don't get.

Until last weekend.

I was talking about some script ideas and character development with my brother Christopher. Afterwards he made a remark that is so simple and true— yet somehow I had missed it before.

"Zombies justify our need for violence."

You see it's okay to kill zombies. THEY NEED TO BE KILLED right? So (dichotomy time) when I was playing Resident Evil 4 (and loving every minute of it); and my wife said to me "Honey, this is so violent." My reply was always, "But the zombies need to be killed darling. Somebody has to do it!"

I was justifying my need for violence.

Okay zombies, I get your appeal.

But I'm still burned out.

You know, I think that 90% of the time I'm writing about superheroes that movie is buzzing around in the back of my head.

I'm also a loyal fan of "Superman Returns." And I will fight you if you disagree— bring it.

Bulgakov and Belly

Libby Landvatter is my wife, editor, and musical collaborator. She (being a Russian speaker and student of literature) wrote a song based on the book "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhael Bulgakov. The song is called "Apartment Fifty" and our band Belly of the Whale has recorded it and been playing it live for about a year. (Coincidentally the book also inspired Mick Jagger to write his lyrics for "Sympathy for the Devil."— though Libby and I were unaware at the time we worked on our take.)

Jan Vanhellemont runs an exquisitely detailed fan site for Bulgakov and specifically Master and Margarita. He has put up a bio for our music and featured Apartment Fifty. He sure did his homework on the band too. Check it out:

Disney bought Marvel today. The news came out of no where. The full (known) breakdown is here at CBR.

I'm curious to see how this will effect the industry (especially its impact on the indie market- if any).

I'm still working on getting King of Pain # 1 out into the world. We've had a few technical difficulties and scheduling setbacks. Bummer huh?

Expanding the Comic Market/Creating a New Market

"What can be done to create a comics market for the new era and why no one's going to do it."

What is needed

1) Material that appeals to a wide audience

2) A way to let the audience know the material exists

3) A means for said materials to be easily accessible to the audience

Seems like utilizing the internet is the common sense solution here. However, we are still stuck in cannibalistic system of men in their thirties hiding in little shops buying Marvel Comics almost exclusively.

I've been working in a comic shop in Salt Lake City that is located next door to a Game Stop. Kids under the age of eighteen show little interest in comic books. Often they accidentally walk into the shop with a confused look and then hurry back out.

In market competition Halo trumps The X-Men.

What can be done to save comic books from themselves?

From Mr. Grant's article:

"Someone asked recently about how to break the grip of the three pronged trap the comics industry spent the last forty years building around itself. The answer's both simple and complicated, but I should reiterate - again (because no matter how many times I bring up the truth, the legend continues to be spread) that comics did not abandon the newsstands, the newsstands abandoned comics! The direct market wasn't born and adopted by publishers because they were interested in making changes – publishers are almost never interested in making changes, preferring to bear those ills they know than flee to those they know not of – but because the comics business had nowhere else to go. That it worked out pretty well, until it didn't (and for a small section of the business, it's still working out fairly well), was one of those wish and a prayer things that demonstrated, against then-common industry wisdom, there was a sizable audience willing to go out of its way to buy comics.

Emphasize was.

The last decade-point-five was basically a matter of circling the wagons, and as a result we ended up with a system that no longer works especially well for the customer but is now designed to make the system a fairly smooth process for those running the system. Which is the eventual entropic fate of most systems.

To break out of the current bottleneck, we need three things: material that might appeals to a wider audience, a way to let them know that material exists, and a means to getting the material to places where they can easily find it.

Traditionally, comics companies have produced material that might appeal to a wider audience, then marketed it to their standard audience and put it solely where it must be tracked down: comics shops, whose existing audiences increasingly do not support new material. When sales figures come in, the experiment is then proclaimed a bust, and business as usual continues.

The problem with changing the existing system is that you can't just deal with any one prong of the three-pronged problem, and start work on the next prong once you have one prong solved, because you're never going to solve one prong without simultaneously dealing with the other two. You have to achieve all three objectives at once or you fail. It's that simple, and that difficult.

Money is obviously an issue in all this – even the most successful companies don't have much of a slush fund for the necessary risk – but the biggest problem of money isn't cost or risk but who controls the pursestrings. Especially these days, in whatever walk is under discussion, those who control pursestrings tend not to be a terribly visionary lot, and generally react to setbacks – and there are always setbacks to new ventures – by reverting to business as usual, even if business as usual no longer works. Because to moneymen what was once known to have worked is always preferable to what has never before been tried, unless results are startling and immediate.

But that's the challenge, and whoever's the first to pull it off will become the new Marvel that comics publishers have fantasized about becoming for the past fifty years..."

Blake Snyder: 1957-2009

According to The Hollywood Reporter screenwriter and author Blake Snyder passed away on August 4th, at the age of 51.

The article says:

"There was no one more gifted in the art of story structure than Blake Snyder," said longtime friend and screenwriter Tracey Jackson ("Confessions of a Shopaholic"). "He could tell you in two minutes why something didn't work and in another three how to fix it. And unlike many with a great gift, he was not miserly. He felt it was his calling to help others help themselves and took great pride when those he helped found success. He made all those he met feel special and encouraged them all in their dreams."

The stuff about Mr. Snyder encouraging people in their dreams is not just death-rhetoric. The guy was super-cool to amateur writers. I recently blogged about a series of email discussions with him. He helped me with story ideas I had been working on.

In our discussions he gave me tons of great advice and was always upbeat and positive. He never seemed annoyed and was always helpful. He continued to tell me to keep in touch. I wasn't paying him anything, nor was he soliciting me. Mr. Snyder was just being a nice guy.

So here's to a nice guy that we no longer have in this realm.

Glenn Beck: Us Versus Them

When I watch Glenn Beck I think, man this guy basically spews hate-speech. He dehumanizes what he sees as his enemies and creates an "us versus them" world. This in effect makes me think of him as less than human, or in my mind he becomes the "them."

Somebody Call Neil Gaiman, Miracleman Returns!

In the 1980's comic book author Alan Moore (best known for Watchmen and V for Vendetta) was pushing superhero stories to their existential and post modern limits. One of his projects was to take a classic 1950's superhero and modernize him (you know add sex and violence, the good stuff right?). The character used was called Marvelman in Britain, and (in order to avoid any legal problems from Marvel Comics) Miracleman in the United States. (Being here in Utah, I read the Miracleman versions so I'll refer to it by that title.)

Alan Moore wrote sixteen issues. He left the series to his friend and colleague Neil Gaiman. From a storytelling standpoint Alan Moore had seemingly painted the series into a corner. Miraclman had defeated his arch nemesis, conquered Earth, created a class of royalty superheroes, and forced peace upon mankind. Surprisingly Gaiman was able to continue the series, and some would even say that he topped Alan Moore's run.

Gaiman had three arcs planned to complete the series; The Golden Age, The Silver Age, and finally The Dark Age. Apparently because of publisher bankruptcy Miracleman ended abruptly at issue # 24, and Gaiman never finished the story.

Miracleman has become a legend and much sought after classic in the comic community. Because of other legal issues between certain parties the series couldn't be reprinted. Fans had to search out expensive back issues or download scans online in order to read the work- and still do to this day. It is a common held belief that comic-superstar Todd McFarlane is the guy stopping the series from currently being reprinted, but it's hard to tell the hearsay from the reality.

I personally found as many actual issues as I could and then read scans online. Alan Moore's work was dark, but very interesting. Gaiman's run was surprising and creative. I was really getting into his setup when the story just ended. Bummer.

Neil Gaiman's critically acclaimed run

Right now Comic-Con 2009 is underway and today Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada made a surprising announcement. Marvel Comics have purchased the rights to Marvelman (as he can be properly be called now) and they are making plans for his future! I guess they've figured out the legal mess and/or can afford better lawyers than everybody else. They're saying they purchased the rights from the original creator of the character. That sounds pretty solid.

So Marvel,

When EC Comics Told the Comics Code Authority to...

As a follow up to my post from yesterday about comic book racism: There is a cool CBR article about EC Comics and a black/white situation.

This is the proud comics tradition that I'm talking about. From the article:

"When the issue first came out in 1953, it was heavily lauded, including the following missive from a certain Mr. Bradbury…

However, when Gaines and Feldstein went to put it in place of the pulled story, they were told no, the story violated the Comics Code.

Judge Charles Murphy (administrator of the Code) said that they would have to change the astronaut from black to white if they wanted it to be included. This was not part of the Code at the time. Feldstein and Gaines felt that Murphy was just deliberately messing with them (again, Gaines felt that the Code was designed specifically to put him out of business).

After being told that, clearly, the color of the astronaut’s skin was practically the whole point of the story, Murphy backed down a bit, but said that they would at least have to get rid of the perspiration on his skin. It could possibly be that Murphy felt that it was exploitative. I do not know, and neither did Feldstein nor Gaines, who only had their suspicions that they were being screwed with.

Feldstein and Gaines both refused to comply (I believe the terms they used included at least one use of the word “fuck”), and Gaines threatened a lawsuit and/or a press conference to shine a light on why exactly the story was objected to.

Comic Book Racism

I've been reading comic books for most of my life. I was always proud of the progressive tradition of racial and gender equality being presented by said books. I remember being very young and getting warm fuzzies when I realized that "Storm," a black woman, was just as good a leader (and sometimes stronger and smarter) as her male counterpart "Cyclops," a white man.

Storm won this battle with Cyclops and became leader of the X-Men. The white man was just wasn't in the frame of mind to lead. The black woman was better fit to rally the troops- go X-Men!

I'm not discounting the chauvinistic and racist moments that do exist in comic history, but I thought that as a geek culture we'd moved past a lot of prejudices.

I guess not.

Dwayne McDuffie, a comic book author and a black man, recently posted a preview of one of his upcoming comics. It featured a few black characters as integral parts of the story line. Some of the "fan" responses were quite disturbing:

“…how many blacks did McDuffie manage to sneak onto the team this time–five? (I bet DC editorial gave him the same order as Burger King in that lawsuit–to “lighten things up around here.”)”

“Why don’t they call this the “Minority League”? ”

“I don’t think anyone will support an original black “mainstream” character. I know I won’t.”

“Couldn’t they get Static, Black Lightning, or one of his daughters instead of Dr. Light on the cover of BET League of America? Ha!”

“Maybe they should establish a separate league for all the negro superheroes. I’m not saying kick them ALL off. One would be okay. (Doesn’t Hollywood have some kind of law that says every movie has to have at least one black in it?) I just think they’re going overboard with all this diversity stuff. I mean, how many comics do minorities read anyway?”

Wow. Thanks for being progressive and accepting fanboys. Heaven forbid a black man writes black characters.
